Kics Racing Gear lug nuts are made in Japan and are some of the most beautiful, tough, and feature-packed fasteners we sell. The Leggdura Racing "Shell Type" lug nut set -- or maybe we should say lug nut SYSTEM -- is a clever solution to some long-standing issues with various aftermarket lug nuts.
First of all, there's been a problem over the years, which is the use of aluminum as a lug nut fastener. Aluminum is light in weight and easy to machine. Plus, it can be finished beautifully in almost any color, making it hard to resist for something like a lug nut application. The issue with aluminum is that it just is not strong enough for the requirements of a lug nut. Yes, an aluminum lug nut can hold your wheels on, but they will distort under high torque and keeping them tight can be a challenge as well.
The ideal lug nut material is steel, but as we all know steel does not lend itself to durable color finishes. That's why you don't see many colors of steel lug nuts other than chrome and black.
Can't we have the beauty of aluminum combined with the strength of steel?
As with many problems, a solution has been found by...people in Japan. The lug nut experts at Kics apparently had the same though process we did, because they came up with a set of strong STEEL (SCM435 ChroMoly steel, to be exact) lug nuts that have an extremely clever and beautiful anodized ALUMINUM outer shell that threads on to the steel lug nut. Although this cover LOOKS like an open-ended lug nut, it is completely sealed, so you don't have to worry about rust from the studs dripping out the ends.
Of course, most of our customers drive street cars, and are also worried about wheel theft. Kics have thought about that as well, so with this lug nut set you get four steel lock fasteners with a special design that cannot be removed with a conventional socket.
Of course the appropriate adapter tools are included: There's a standard hex socket for the hex lug nuts (use a 21mm hex tool) as well as a lock key (19mm/21mm hex), PLUS a resin socket for tightening and loosening the aluminum shell parts. There's a hole in that tool so you could stick a screwdriver through in case the shell is very hard to remove. For tightening, always hand-tighten the shell covers only.
The steel fasteners are 22mm in diameter and have an effective thread length of 28.5mm of engagement with the lug stud. The aluminum shell cover is the same 22mm diameter, and the overall assembly of steel lug nut plus aluminum shell is 53mm in length. The total length of the inside of the lug nut is about 35.8mm, meaning you could have as much as 35mm of stud poking out from the wheel, and you would not bottom out the fastener.
Note that anodized aluminum is susceptible to scratches, and it can fade in UV light. Anodized RED finishes are especially prone to fading. We can't warranty the surface treatment against scratches or fading. Treat them with care and keep them out of the sun if you want the colored finish to stay bright and nice.
As with any custom wheel fastener, we recommend using HAND TOOLS ONLY to install and remove these. No impact tools! Kics suggest torquing the steel lug nuts to 110-120 Nm, or about 81 to 88 lb-ft.
